Hello all,
Well done to all the presenters who were successful this afternoon with their oral presentations.
23/10 - Eight talks, eight passes - very well done to Linda, Kelsey, Omo, Robyn, Stella, Alyssa, Pauline and Fiona.
30/10 - Six talks, six passes - very well done to Antonia, Marina, Chris, Emma, Caitlyn and Linda.
6/11 - Five talks, five passes - very well done to Amy, Emma-Louise, Nicola, Chloe and Gemma.
The subjects were varied and interesting.
I thoroughly enjoyed the talks, your input, your research, your enthusiasm and more, excellent.
For those of you who were at the session today, I would like you to comment on how you felt the session went this afternoon:
- what was your subject?
- did it go as well as you had planned?
- what did you do well?
- could you have done better?
- did you learn something about yourself and your peers?
- what did you think about the feedback etc.?
Your comments will help next week's presenters.
How I ran the session was as follows:
Welcome to the session and the assessment, I had all the presenter's slides ready to go, the class decided on the running order, the presenters all delivered, with questions from me and their peers.
I advised when the 8 minutes was up as a guide to come to conclusion (5 mins is the minimum needed as per the unit descriptor, and 8 mins is the guideline for the upper limit).
Each presenter was given two feedback sheets at the start - one was to self-reflect and the other to provide objective feedback to one presentation of their choosing. I felt this worked really well.
I then provided my detailed feedback which today resulted in a full house of passes. It really was a very enriching session indeed.
Thanks in advance and well done again.
Mark
This is Linda's feedback as she was having difficulty posting to the blog - "To everyone in class today who listened and gave feedback on my talk regarding KYPHOSCOLIOSIS I thank you. I enjoyed doing my presentation, but was a tad nervous, however after hearing your feedback I'm feeling rather proud of myself. I feel I could have improved on the amount of information I had for you all, however it's not a very well documented or researched area. I do feel I could have improved on my language during my presentation a few times (my good old Scottish slang popped up), but I will hopefully improve on this for future. I feel good knowing I have learned how to use power point and given my 1st successful presentation. I also learned a good few things from fellow classmates on topics I had no idea about before. On my final note, I'm so proud of everyone today, we pushed our boundaries and stood in front of each other and divulged a little of our personal lives at points through our chosen topics and we all did it perfectly in our own ways. Thank you for your feedback - positive and negative, as this gives me something to work on for my future power points. Congratulations girls we did it and thank you Mark xx
ReplyDeleteGreat feedback Linda, and this really does set the scene well for peer feedback moving forward. You presented really well on a topic I guess very few of us knew about, and you provided great structure, solid explanations and followed my guidance to the letter. You were particularly good in the q and a session and reaped the rewards. Well done again and thank you for starting the ball rolling for feedback. Your words should be of great help to the presenters next Monday and the following Monday. The key, as always, is to push boundaries and this is precisely what the SWAP course does, and my unit is no exception. I enjoyed the session very much today and learned lots about all the subjects, but crucially, about you all as learners. Bravo, and you will be authorised for my class the next two Mondays. Cheers, Mark
DeleteHi All, Would like to thank each and everyone of my fellow classmates for all the good feed back on my talk and for the support and would also like to thank my Tutor Mark for the feed back and support also. I done my talk on Alcoholism. I did not feel my talk went to plan as my nerves took over, I feel I could have done a lot better if I could have kept calm but I passed and feel so proud of myself and also my fellow class mates as we have achieved our first assessment and that is us all one step closer to being a nurse so well done to you all. I learned that we were all feeling the same a bit nervous. I was all chuffed with my feed back as I thought I had failed as I was so nervous, I had missed two pages of my talk and was all over the place but since doing my talk and getting feedback of you all I feel more confident and to be honest it was not that bad after all.
ReplyDeleteMorning, Fiona, and thank you for your constructive reflection, well done. Don't forget, nerves (or the performing edge as I call it in my teaching), is perfectly normal. In fact, it could be argued when presenters don't feel some in trepidation, there is something wrong! The key to success, amongst other factors, is preparation (tick), following the structuring of the exemplars (tick), solid research using appropriate reference points (tick) and getting up - and you did, first! Lots of individual and group learning going on, and that is so important. If you look back at the criteria, you will see that you hit all those points very well, and yes, lots of room for improvement, but that will be the case for (arguably) everybody. I am delighted that you signposted confidence improvement too, and that is key to my philosophy working with learners at all levels. Well done, and hopefully we will hear from more of the students in your presentation group. All the best, Mark
DeleteHello everyone. I'll be honest, my nerves were shattered, worrying about standing up in front of you all doing my presentation but you all put me at ease so thank you. My subject was Urine infections and preventing them. I felt my talk went okay, although I wish I had looked up more when I was talking but instead, I kept my head down the whole time wishing it would be over, and then once it was, thinking God that wasn't actually that bad. Apart from that, I think I put enough information and facts in there to keep everyone interested. I wouldn't go as far as to say that I enjoyed it but, I am proud of myself for doing it and I loved hearing everyone else's work and learning from them. For anyone still to do it, try not to overthink it, and remember the people who are sitting listening to you have the same worries and concerns, we are all in the same boat and we will all get through this together. Take care
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, Pauline. Thank you for taking the time to post some comments. Nerves are intrinsic for presentation delivery. You delivered a really solid talk, on a topic rarely researched. I will add this one to the list next year. For sure, more contact with the audience would have enhanced the delivery, but please don't underestimate how great your talk was. All attendees would testify that you did the business and adhered to all the key points in my teaching. Maybe the more you deliver, the more you will 'enjoy'? See you in a few weeks and well done again. Mark
DeleteComments from Robyn - "I was feeling really nervous doing the talk but feel this may be down to not having done something like in years, however I am glad I went for as once we entered the class and seen that everyone was in the same boat it helped a lot with my nerves. I certainly can't believe the worst thing I felt about my presentation was that I didn't have enough time to talk through everything I had written; I was worried it wouldn't be long enough (how wrong was I haha). Unfortunately, this then meant that because i was trying to hurry up to be able to say everything I had, I had to speak a lot quicker which was something I was really trying not to do as i am aware I am a really fast speaker naturally. I really enjoyed everyone's presentation and certainly learned a lot about various subjects that I had limited knowledge in. Being able to watch everyone else's presentation will certainly help going forward as I'm sure there may be more presentations coming out way.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Robyn
Thank you for these words, Robyn. Lovely bit of self-reflection, this. You are right, a presentation is a little like going to karaoke. You see the good, the middle ground, and the room for improvement! Your research was very very detailed, and as you notate, just watch the pace of delivery. It is not a race to the end! I really enjoyed your Sway talk, Robyn, and your really came into your own in the q and a. I am happy that you signposted the great work of your peers. Bravo, you. Mark
ReplyDeleteI was nervous about my presentation but I found it was a lot easier than I expected because I was talking to a group of people who I get on with extremely well and I think that’s important to remember that we are all in this together and you are speaking to friends! I only used my phone and worked off of my power point from that. I thought it went okay, do wish I remembered to slow down more obviously the nerves take over. I found it really helpful that my topic was on something I’m extremely familiar with so it was easier to talk about. I enjoyed the feedback form although I could probably list more negatives about my talk than positives. I was extremely proud of everyone in my group having found the courage to get up and speak. Everyone just needs to remember we’re all in the same boat, all nervous about speaking in front of a group but remember we’re all friends , we’re just presenting ourselves more formally in this talk! Good luck to everyone , we’re all rooting for you!!
ReplyDeletewhat was your subject?
did it go as well as you had planned?
what did you do well?
could you have done better?
did you learn something about yourself and your peers?
what did you think about the feedback etc.?
^^^ forgot to put my name on comment
ReplyDeleteHi Kelsey, some great comments in here, thank you. The collegiate approach to learning really is something I try to cultivate in my teaching and learning and you’ve hit the proverbial nail on the head there. Self assessment is always helpful when critiquing but do look at the positives, of which there were many in your talk. That’s great you’ve given the rallying call to the presenters attending tomorrow, as I’m sure they’ll appreciate that. Well done again and don’t forget to take those positive takeaways with you for any future talks you’ll be doing in other units on the course. Best, Mark
DeleteChris- my topic was meningitis. Well done everyone who’s passed so far! I’m glad it went well for everyone today. I know I learned a lot of things from the presentations today. My own presentation I thought went well. There was a few bits I didn’t elaborate on as much as I had planned too but other than that I was fairly happy with it. Seeing some of the other power points has made me realise I need to up my game on the design of my PowerPoints though as they all looked very professional today.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris, and thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. Your talk was excellent, make no mistake and apart from some additional photos, the construct of yours and the way you used it was one of the best so far. I was impressed with your delivery and you should be proud of your achievement. I too really enjoyed the session as there was lots of active learning going on. Great stuff and hopefully we’ll hear from all the other attendees. Have a great evening. Mark
DeleteHello Mark, hope you are well. I was an absolute wreck yesterday before I came into the class and presented my presentation to the class, afterwards I felt like there was a weight lifted and I honestly do NOT know why I stressed so much because it was absolutely fine. There is a few things I wish I could change but the main thing is we all passed and I an super proud of how well we all done considering our nerves. I would say for anyone that has to still do it, DO NOT PANIC!! DO NOT OVERTHINK!! You will do absolutely brilliant I promise. You will also come out of the class after doing the presentation feeling great and very proud of yourself. First ones out the way bring on the rest.. HAHA
ReplyDeleteGreat critique Emma, and as always, I have a job to maintain calm for the attendees on the day. What you say is correct, as I always ensure that each learner at least has put sufficient prep. in, and crucially, has considered the importance and necessity for sensible structure and linking of ideas. That was a big positive again, in yesterday's session. All of you will do lots of talks after this in some way I imagine, and you should indeed be proud of your achievement(s). A pass at this level is certainly no given, but the level of application across both sessions so far has been mightily impressive. All the best, and thanks for taking time out to provide some encouragement for the presenters in the final group. Mark
DeleteSorry I have took a little longer to add my blog comment but for the rest of the class delivering their talk tomorrow, I wish you all good luck! In our group the chats where all brilliant! It was a great way to learn about different topics and my everyone had great power points packed with information!
ReplyDeleteI was nervous to start my own talk as I talk really fast at the best of times and i missed out a few of my stats I had on my flashcards but you just keep going! I was happy with the way I presented my information on Sepsis. I put in the work and I thought about the best way to deliver the talk. I read over the slides then checked my cards and looked at my audience and elaborated a bit on each part. Thank you to my group and also for the great feedback I received that really meant alot!
Support each other through the nerves I look forward to hearing how you all get on :)
Hi Marina, thank you for jotting your thoughts down, and some great observations they are too. You have noted some really helpful points for your own delivery and also for your peers delivering today. The group learning (in terms of delivery and content) is vital, and I too have learned a lot of things about a wide variety of subjects. Well done and look out for my observations after today’s final run of talks. Have a good week, Mark
DeleteHi everyone, thank you to everyone who I presented in front of for the good feedback and well done everyone for passing. My presentation was on autism, I was really nervous about the thought of presenting although when I was presenting I felt alright with it. I think I presented well, spoke clearly and had good eye contact with my audience. I enjoyed speaking about autism and found all of the other presentations extremely interesting. I enjoyed doing my research into the subject and expanding my existing knowledge. Overall I think this has helped build my public speaking skills and I enjoyed presenting.
ReplyDeleteHi Gemma and thank you for popping some thoughts down, and detailed ones they are, too. It is certainly OK to be nervous, and this is quite natural. But it is how you deal will the performing edge as I call it. You were prepared, you knew your stuff and you provided good answers to the questions too, so well done. Expanding existing and developing new knowledge is so important, so thank you for addressing that. All the best and see you a week today. Mark
